Welcome to the CAVWAYs Web-Site

You have come to the right place to learn about Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) Highways (CAVWAYs), the CAVs that will travel on CAVWAYs, and a vision of future mass-transit based on CAV Systems. You will meet Davius, spiritual guide to the history and wisdom behind the vision.

Motivations

Themes

Issue: fixed-route, fixed-schedule (FRFS) mass-transit systems are obsolete
Vision: variable-route, variable-schedule (VRVS) systems are sustainable
Approach: use system engineering to create safe, efficient, secure, accessible, sustainable VRVS CAV Systems
Challenges: standardization, traveler trust, legal constraints, and external threats

Whom is this web-site for?

Navigation
Use the icon (≡) at the upper left of each page to navigate this site. An executive summary of the CAV-Systems concept is given in the Summary.
The Confluence of Historical and Future Trends: from Roman Roads to California Freeways, controlled right-of-way and access have enabled travelers through the ages.
Mass-Transit Solutions for an Automobile Culture: FRFS transportation systems such as railroads, no matter how fast the trains, will have little effect on automobile drivers and traffic.
System Engineering, a Framework for Creativity: individual CAVs will not transform mass transit; CAVs integrated with CAVWAYs to comprise CAV Systems, will. CAV Systems will offer the new-and-improved VRVS transportation that automobile drivers already have and are unlikely to give up.
The Promised Land: CAVs - single-occupant cars, taxis, limos, and buses - operating on CAVWAYs under common protocols, protected from human drivers, will operate as VRVS systems, offering safe, efficient, secure, accessible, sustainable mass transit.

Editor

Maniel Vineberg, recovering civil servant and government contractor, and self-proclaimed Transportation Engineer, claims to be a friend and colleague of Davius. Judge for yourself.
"One day, in the relatively near future,
Mass-Transit based on CAV Systems will
take us from where we are to where we want to go,
safely, efficiently, securely, and at reasonable cost."
                                      Davius, Roman God of Transportation
