Dual-Mode Vehicles

Dual-mode vehicles, designed for human drivers, but equipped with controllers and interfaces allowing them to operate as CAVs on CAVWAYs, will open the possibility of direct CAVWAY access to travelers driving their own cars. The feasibility of developing such cars has effectively been demonstrated; these cars are presently classified as Autonomous Level 3 (see link at right), where drivers can intervene when a car is in autonomous mode – this is only possible because the car can accept either computer or driver control signals.
The production and sale of the Tesla Autopilot (see link at right) is an important step towards dual-mode vehicles which will be critical to transition. Note: while Autopilot appears to validate the dual-mode concept, for CAV-Systems, the CAV-System protocols would replace what Autopilot now uses for autonomous mode because Autopilot is not part of a system including other CAVs or a CAVWAY. |
