The CAVWAY Development Methodology, Simulation
An object-oriented, discrete-event CAV-System Simulation (CSIM) serves as a software prototype, an unambiguous characterization of CAVs and CAVWAY components, functions, and protocols. CSIM is a low-cost, low-risk approach to document and test design alternatives and to either verify the feasibility of implementing CAV-System functions and protocols or indicate that one or more critical experiments will also be needed for that purpose. CSIM is a living prototype on which extensions may be built and improvements may be introduced, tested, and evaluated. Concept validation is not optimization The primary objective of CSIM is to show the feasibility of formulating algorithms and protocols to meet system requirements. The often dreaded words, "good enough," actually do apply to CSIM. Superior functions, protocols, algorithms, and interfaces will evolve during CAV-System and CSIM development. At any given moment, CSIM is an executable characterization of the current CAV-System design and function set and can be extended to incorporate, test, and evaluate new features in support of continual improvement. Keeping CSIM current allows it to help mitigate risk and identify critical CAV-System experiments. |
Davius tells us that Roman engineers didn't need object-oriented, discrete-event simulation because the concept of a road had already been validated. However, this is not yet the case with CAV Systems.
