Coordination

Note and Links

CAVs on CAVWAYs will use protocols to coordinate. These protocols, identical decision-making processes in each CAV, will allow CAVs to "think" alike; autonomy will allow each to act safely. For example, under a protocol requiring that it be in the Local Lane to exit, an exiting CAV currently in that lane would stay there;  otherwise, it would change lanes to reach the rightmost lane in time to exit from that lane.
Although all CAVs would observe the same protocol, each CAV would make any necessary lane change autonomously - using its own sensing, steering, and throttle capabilities - to ensure that it did so safely, into an open box.
Note: a CAVWAY (all CCs) must assure that it does not become overloaded for this lane-change protocol to work as specified.
