Early CAVWAYs

Definition

The implementation of early CAVWAYs will signal "the birth of CAVWAYs." This singular achievement will move legacy freeways and highways into the age of CAV-System mass transit.
As now envisioned, early CAVWAYs will be carved out of existing right-of-way, much as High-Occupancy-Vehicle (HOV) lanes are now.

An Early CAVWAY is a CAVWAY segment whose access is restricted to CAVs. Only CAVs certified by a CAVWAY jurisdiction, such as a state agency, will be granted access. While an early CAVWAY is a part of a future CAV System, the intent is that it be part of a complete CAV System at some future date. Prior to full implementation, early CAVWAYs will serve as living test-beds to validate CAV-System design and concept of operations.
